11th International Conference on the Chinese Economy

The "new normal growth" and the future of the China's economy

CERDI-IDREC, Clermont Auvergne University, France and CCES, Fudan University, Shanghai, China

Clermont-Ferrand, 19-20 October, 2017

The CERDI-IDREC organizes every two years an international conference on the Chinese economy. The conference attracts participants worldwide to address major economic issues and challenges that China and the world are currently facing. For this 11th edition, the conference is organized with China Center for Economic Studies (CCES), Fudan University, Shanghai, China.

The theme is: The "new normal growth" and the future of the China's economy. The theme is significant and timely from both the research and policy perspectives.

China is officially entering a “new normal” era for its economy. After the slowdown of growth, the economy is rebalancing. The world turmoil has probably accelerated the adjustments but nevertheless, China is entering a new phase and must avoid the so called middle-income trap. The trade engine is less efficient and the government has implemented policies to boost the domestic demand. China is facing a demographic transition with an ageing population and the society is asking for more social security, more pensions but also more environmental safety. The domestic economy is deeply changing with the service domination in the output, the upgrading of industrial production and the unfinished reforms of state enterprises and of the financial sector.

The project “One Belt, one Road” is supposed to design the new international strategy of China and serve its interests, for the domestic economy as well as for trade and Foreign Direct Investments.

Consequently, the challenges are numerous and the uncertainty is high.

The themes of this conference are:

  • Consumption as the engine of growth
  • The demographic challenge
  • The reform of the State-owned enterprises
  • The evolution of inequalities and the social stability
  • The reform of the financial sector
  • The renminbi as an international currency
  • The upgrading of technology
  • The competitiveness of China’s economy
  • The relationships between China and the developing economies

Keynote speakers:

Fan Gang, NERI, Beijing University, China
Barry Naughton, University of California, San Diego, USA
Wing Thy WOO, University of California at Davis, USA
Jun Zhang, CCES, Fudan University, Shanghai, China

As for the previous conferences, the best papers will be published in the China Economic Review and/or in a book format.
